For sheer spirit, nothing can
match the Peace River Alaska
Highway region. The area, of
course, is most famous as the
starting point of the Alaska
Highway, but there's a great
deal more to be discovered
here. Comprising the northeast
corner of British Columbia, this
is an area of contrasts- the
fertile farmland in the Peace
River Valley contrasts with the
oil and natural gas-rich muskeg
between Fort St. John and Fort
Nelson, with contrast again with
the majestic Rocky Mountains.
Rapid rivers and soothing hot
springs can be found throughout
this region. |

The varied environmental changes
in this region support many
different types of wildlife.
Along the Alaska Highway, you
can see everything from timid
deer to lumbering moose to Stone
sheep to black bears ambling
along side the road. |

The highway itself is historic! This 2400 km highway
was built in just nine months as a military supply
route during WWII. While the wars are long over,
millions travel this path to enjoy the scenery and
wildlife found in few other places.
Recreational opportunities in the Peace River area –
especially fishing – is boundless. The rapid Peace
and Liard Rivers support many different species of
sportsfish for the avid angler. Fishermen come from
all over the world to test their rods against the
great Northern Pike. The multitude of unspoiled
Provincial Parks in the region has limitless camping
opportunities and hiking trails through the
mountains and valleys here. |
